Fiona Needham (MSc BSc(Hons) RGN) |
|
Fiona Needham qualified with a BSc (Hons.) in Nursing Studies in 1985. She has been a Senior Sister on a dialysis unit and has worked as a Practice Nurse since 1991.
To qualify as a Nurse Practitioner, Fiona received training from Dr. Nick Allen and gained a Master's Degree in Nurse Practitioner Studies at Leeds Metropolitan University. Fiona has obtained diplomas in diabetes, cervical and breast screening and coronary heart disease. |

Fiona also teaches Anatomy and Physiology at Leeds Metropolitan University to postgraduate nursing students. |

What is a Nurse Practioner? |
|
|
A nurse who has extended his or her role to cover some of the skills, such as physical examinations, diagnosis and treatment, previously the domain of doctors.
By employing a nurse practitioner the practice can:
- Offer patients more choice about the kind of health care they receive
- Enable the doctors to attend to more complex problems

Children, teenagers and adults can consult with Fiona. She can:
- Fiona is a nurse precriber and can prescribe the majority of drugs prescribed by doctors
- Take a medical history and perform a relevant physical examination
- Diagnose and treat common health problems (see list below)
- Provide advice and relevant information about medical conditions
- Refer to GP's, nurses and other health care professionals attached to the practice
- Refer to specialist doctors and health care professionals based at local hospitals
- Provide health promotion, such as smoking cessation
- Provide specialist advice and care to patients with diabetes, hypertension and reduced kidney function

|
|
Fiona provides a comprehensive package of care for patients with Type II diabetes. She works closely with Wharfedale Hospital Diabetic Clinic to provide shared care for patients on Insulin. For more information about diabetes see the Diabetes UK Website. |

Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) |
|
|
Fiona has an interest in the treatment of high blood pressure. |

Kidney Disease |
|
|
Fiona is developing a practice protocol together with Dr Allen for the treatment and care of patients with reduced kidney function.
